"I heard that they were doing Flash Gordon, they'd virtually cast it I think but they hadn't cast Vultan," booms Brian Blessed to Empire about his own snagging of a role which would become career defining. "I was asked to go along and meet Mike Hodges. And there was Dino. I said, 'I'm bloody made for this. I saw it as a child. If you don't give it to me I'm going to bloody kill you'."

"Follow Stanley Kubrick as he creates his savage and brilliant Vietnam film, hewing closely to the theme that dominated his creative life for four decades. The duality of human nature. Poised between good and evil, mankind was, in Kubrick's view, a complex creature equally capable of unspeakable savagery and heart-melting tenderness. Full Metal Jacket would make his case in vivid, blood-soaked Technicolor. Through interviews with Kubrick's collaborators and cast members, including Vincent D'Onofrio, Lee Ermey and Adam Baldwin, this documentary reveals how Kubrick's brilliant visual sense, astute knowledge of human nature, and unique perspective on the duality of man came together to make Full Metal Jacket an unforgettable cinematic experience, taking its place in his war trilogy alongside cinematic landmarks Fear and Desire and Paths of Glory." -imdb.com

The Onion's AV Club does a stellar retrospective on UHF with interviews from most of the cast and some very entertaining insight on what it was like to make that movie at that time in history. A long but wonderful read.

My theory is of course that Stanley Kubrick, in his genius, was predicting with eerie accuracy the highest-grossing animated film of all time, 33 years before its release.

A dud at the box office when it opened 20 years ago this week, The Shawshank Redemption now perenially tops IMDb’s favorite-movies list—the ultimate in “guy cry” cinema. A story of studio maneuvering, big paychecks deferred, and well-earned roof suds.
